The folks behind Spiritland weren’t messing around when they curated their new three-month residency, which opened this week in the bar of Angela Hartnett’s acclaimed Shoreditch restaurant Merchants Tavern. They’ve compiled a swoon-worthy selection of vinyl, got a sound system to make audiophiles go weak at the knees and recruited an impressive array of guest programmers including Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor, Franz Ferdinand’s Alex Kapranos, Paul Thomson and Fred Deakin from Lemon Jelly and a whole host of people who know music better than anyone else – music journalists, of course! There will be nights dedicated solely to Lou Reed, Prince and Paul Simon, film soundtracks from Amy Grimehouse, Eric Hobsbawm’s secret jazz collection and other aural treats to suit every musical preference. And best of all, it’s 100 percent free.
