The Little Shop Of Horrors is arguably the most curious looking place on Hackney Road (against stiff competition), so it seems pretty reasonable the owners are raising money to turn the store into London’s first Museum of Curiosities.
After scooping museum status from Hackney Council earlier this year, the owners are trying to crowd-fund £10,000 to turn the creaky shop into a bonafide, totally-legit Wunderkabinett (literally a “cabinet of wonders”) museum.
They’re going to have exhibitions of curiosities, natural history & fine art: ‘from old master etchings to tin toys & extinct birds’. Plus, there’ll be a miniature gift shop, coral reef aquarium and tiny baroque cocktail bar.
They say: “‘We will put on a packed schedule of talks, class & lectures from the world’s endlessly obscure repertoire, from aquarium husbandry to Surrealism.’
So far nearly £5,000 has been pledged towards their goal with 17 days left to pledge. The money’s going towards finishing the building work, hiring a Literary Director, funding the exhibitions program and developing the drinks menu.
