NORTH

GARUFA
Older sibling to Holborn’s Garufin, this more modest neighbourhood restaurant remains one of the best places for a traditional Argentine steak. The chips are good, too. 104 Highbury Park, N5 2XE.

EAST

BUEN AYRE
With its small, simply furnished room and low-key ambience, you might think this popular Hackney steakhouse is a budget offering. But the top-notch cuts are priced fairly rather than cheaply. 50 Broadway Market, E8 4QJ.

santa maria del sur

SOUTH

SANTA MARIA DEL SUR
South of the river and in need of a big, bloody steak? This is the place for you. The one thing this Battersea stalwart never gets wrong is its meat. 129 Queenstown Rd, SW8 3RH.

casa malevo

WEST

CASA MALEVO
This exceptional place is in upmarket ‘Connaught Village’, a short stroll from Marble Arch. The look may be home-spun, but the steaks (and starters and puddings) are dead on the money – lots of money. 23 Connaught St, W2 2AY.

gaucho piccadilly

CENTRAL

GAUCHO PICCADILLY
The glitz and glamour of Gaucho’s multi-level flagship branch may be a far cry from the wilds of the Pampas, but what it lacks in ‘trad’ authenticity, it makes up for in quality dishes. 25 Swallow St, W1B 4QR.
