Winter fever: London’s warming alpine pop-ups

The Lodge fondue

Fond of fondue? As winter approaches, there’s a blizzard of chalet chic spreading across London. Among them is The Lodge in Balham, which has proper fondues, winter cocktails, and a properly cosy feel.

On a grander scale – though perhaps with less of a seasonal feel to the dishes – is Le Chalet, already open on the rooftop of Selfridges, by the same team who ran this summer’s successful pop-up on the same spot. Grills still feature heavily, but so do smart seafood dishes and gorgeous desserts. It’s a deluxe pop-up, with prices to match.

Not far behind in the fancy league is Lodge d’Argent opening the roof of Coq d’Argent in the City on November 19. It will be offering a wintry menu featuring raclette, tartiflette and… fondue. There’s also a cocktail menu including some hot concoctions. There’s a score of others venues doing wintry pop-ups too, but these three are the current big cheeses.
