Good news east Londoners, London Fields Lido has had some mega floodlights installed which means that, from tomorrow, the 500-metre heated outdoor pool will be open from 6.30am until 9pm, meaning you can finally go for a dip before and after the sun rises/sets. Hooray! It’s excellent news for anyone brave enough to make that chilly dash from the cosy changing room into the heated water, but can’t make time for a visit during the day.

As a regular lido swimmer, I won’t lie to you, some winter mornings can be, err… bracing (yes, that means bloody cold!), but it’s always worth the few moments of chills for the pleasure of a refreshing dip in the steaming warm water. I’ll also let you in on a little secret that makes the whole outdoor winter swimming malarky 100 times more pleasant: flip flops. Cold feet = cold body. Fact.

Find out more about London Fields Lido. Think swimming outdoors in a heated pool is hardcore? Here are some tips for how to swim in unheated waters.
