Love it or loathe it, it’s finally here! The most hotly anticipated venue since Lady Dinah’s Cat Emporium, Cereal Killer Cafe is finally opening tomorrow, December 10 at 139 Brick Lane to the delight of cereal lovers worldwide and the chagrin of all haters of novelty fads. But haters gonna hate, and we’re pretty damn excited by the idea. They’ve got 120 international cereal varieties on offer, 20 toppings and, wait for it, 30 different milks! No, we had no idea there were so many either. Irish twin founders Gary and Alan Keery want to bring cereal out of the home and make it a meal for any time of the day.
They’ll be serving bowls of cereal (with warm, steamed or cold milk) to the masses from morning to night, alongside coffee, toast, cereal-inspired cakes (Lucky Charm cheesecake anyone?), cereal cocktails (mash-ups of different varieties, not Weetabix with whiskey) and 13 different varieties of Pop Tart. No porridge though, which apparently doesn’t count as cereal.
The café is steeped in breakfast-based nostalgia with TVs playing 1980s and ’90s classics, movie soundtracks and cereal memorabilia lining the walls, including some impressive old cereal boxes, skateboards, kites, cuddly toys, games and magazines. You’ll be reunited with old friends such as the Tony the Frosties Tiger and the Sugar Puffs Honey Monster as you chow down on a bowl of e-numbertastic treats and bounce out of there on a sugar high.
We went down before it opened for a sneak peek and a chat with the owners. Here’s a tasty preview.
