If you’re still not feeling Christmassy enough, a trip to Kew Gardens will resolve that in a glittery flash: it’s been given a stunningly sparkly festive makeover (above), featuring a series of incredible light installations that should woo even the most curmudgeonly humbug-er. There are also lots of family-friendly attractions, including a Victorian carousel, a snowflake grotto and live music.

For festive fun that really gets the kids in a spin, check out Bump Roller Disco at Winterville, where the teetering tots can skate away some  of that pre-Christmas excess energy. It costs £5 for under 14s, and if you’re feeling coordinated, adults can join for £7.

End the day with choreographer  extraordinaire Matthew Bourne’s glorious revival of ‘Edward Scissorhands’ (Sadler’s Wells, £12-£55). Tim Burton’s gothic tale about a boy looking for acceptance in a small town is a cut above, seasonally speaking.
