Video: Behind the scenes of the new Tottenham Court Road station

Screen shot 2015-01-02 at 16.24.28The Northern line part of the new Tottenham Court Road station opens this month on Jan 12. Take a look at what to expect.

Transport fans prepare yourself for the epic transformation of Tottenham Court Road Station. There will be 3 new entrances (plus a revamped old one), more escalators (which will be the second longest on the tube line after Angel), a bigger ticket hall and complete step free access. It’s a massive transformation costing over £1 billion, so get excited for a brand spanking shiny new TCR. (Don’t panic, those funky Eduardo Paolozzi mosaics are being preserved. Though hopefully they won’t cause as much of a traffic jam when someone decides to block the walkway with their obstructive tourist photography.)

The first of the three stages of work being completed will be ready to explore this month, but you’ll have to wait a while longer to nosy around the Central line and Crossrail parts. Central Line users, we hope you’ve decided on your new alighting points as Central line trains will not stop at TCR from Jan 3 (yep, that’s tomorrow) right the way through 2015 while work is being carried out.

The Londonist got an exclusive look behind the blue hoardings (lucky devils!). Here’s their sneaky peek at the new station.

Thanks to The Londonist for this fab video! It’s the first in a series of behind the scenes videos exploring TfL’s major tube upgrades so keep your eyes peeled for more.
