Spot the fake* at Dulwich Picture Gallery

Dulwich Picture Gallery’s peerless collection of paintings? That ain’t proper art. Literally. The gallery has teamed up with conceptual artist Doug Fishbone to commission a Chinese copy of one of its paintings. The fake will be hung in place of the original for three months, with the public invited to try and spot which one of them’s the red herring (there’s prizes and everything). The point? People looking at art more closely. ‘Dulwich contains one of the greatest collections of Old Master paintings in the UK,’ says Dr Xavier Bray, the gallery’s chief curator. ‘We hope that the search will encourage visitors to interact with every single picture.’ By ‘interact’ we assume he means ‘taking them off the wall to look for a “Made in China” sticker’. Security!

‘Made in China: A Doug Fishbone Project’ starts at Dulwich Picture Gallery on Feb 10.
