It’s been an open secret ever since he cheerily leaked the information himself in a recent interview, but now it’s confirmed: Bradley Cooper is coming to the West End!
Riding high on the success of patriotic gunfest ‘American Sniper’, the ‘Hangover’ star is staying in touch with his darker side to bring over his current, acclaimed Broadway hit, ‘Elephant Man’. It’s a revival of Bernard Pomerance’s 1977 play about the life of the severely disfigured Victorian Joseph Merrick.
David Bowie famously played the part of Merrick on Broadway in 1980 and Cooper follows in his footsteps, in a role that has won him great praise on the Great White Way. And lest you worry the Hollywood heartthrob will be buried under a mass of prosthetics, fear not: the play is famous for the fact the actor playing Merrick wears no makeup, but rather suggests his disfigurements through movement alone.
It’s something of a rarity for a Broadway play with a Hollywood A-Lister to transfer direct to the West End, simply because there’s so much less money in it for them. But word is Cooper has become rather fond of our fair city after filming here last year.
In any case, it’s happening, and tickets are on sale now.
