Brixton has been dealt a heavy blow this week with news that businesses in the arches of Atlantic Road and Station Road have been told they have six months to vacate their properties due to redevelopments. But locals aren’t taking this lying down – a petition was immediately launched on change.org to call on landlords Network Rail to halt the planned evictions before consulting with residents and for Lambeth Council to help protect the properties. Many of the businesses have been serving the community for decades and local news website Brixton Buzz said: ‘If this turns out to be the case, we here at Brixton Buzz will put our full weight behind a campaign to save these stores. They form an essential part of Brixton’s character.’ The petition went live yesterday at 1pm and has already reached nearly 5,000 signatures.
