Just when we’d all accepted that London’s now home to a cereal café, someone’s gone and thrown a spoon in the works: Shoreditch is getting its very own porridge café.
Don’t expect a basic menu of Quaker Oats sachets when the eatery – ingeniously called Porridge Cafe – opens on Paul Street on March 2. There are 25 porridge-based meals listed on the website, and they’re both sweet and savoury. Porridge Cafe’s gonna be serving up an oaty storm for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Dishes include bacon, beef, chicken – even a poached egg. Plus, there’s a scrumptious sounding sweet menu featuring a papaya, apple and chia seed mix, as well as a banana, almond and cocoa nib number. There’s a variety of milks to choose from, plus a rotating menu of 11 different grains, including buckwheat and quinoa.
Founder Nik Williamson says: ‘We were inspired to launch the café after seeing the Nordic revival of porridge, where it has been shown to be an exciting and versatile staple dish – both savoury and sweet’.
What do you think? Is this going to be east London’s new health hang-out? Or is porridge never going to be as exciting as retro cereal?
