Love letters to London #5: MNEK

With the unmistakable whiff of love in the air, every day this week we’re asking some of our favourite Londoners to tell us why they’re crazy about the capital. Next up, it’s Grammy-nominated British musician MNEK.

‘I was born and raised in this great city. The South East corner to be exact. Up to the age of 15, Catford was all I knew. It was only when I started my career in the music industry that I was able to discover the different parts of this wondrous place.

Recording sessions, meetings and events in a way “forced” me to travel and explore you and allowed me to discover the different sides of your personality that until then had been unknown to me.

I do feel that my relationship with you has helped me grow at an especially seminal moment in my life. Around the time of my 18th birthday, a big switch happened for me and my lifestyle changed, my friends changed, my success changed. I strongly believe that growing up and exploring you in all your diversity played a massive part in my change. I live in Hoxton (10 minutes from my studio) now with friends and couldn’t be happier. So thank you LDN. I look forward to many more years immersing myself in all you have to offer.’

Places he loves ?

Turtle Bay in Walthamstow – love the food and the vibe

The Nest in Dalston – where I get down

Shoreditch House – before I moved to the area I would work late at my studio, sleep there and shower in the morning at Shoreditch House.

Columbia Flower Market on Hackney Road

The Basement at London Edition Hotel – great for drinks with friends and seeing new live acts
