Known by snobby Zone 1-3ers as a grey slab of suburbia and once described as a ‘complete concrete hell’ by David Bowie, Croydon isn’t known for its top ramen spots, vintage shops or local techno scene. But this could be set to change. Trendy pop-up mall Boxpark in Shoreditch, the brainchild of Roger Wade (the man behind fashion label Boxfresh) has earmarked Croydon as the next destination for the hip shopping containers, planned on the site of an old coal merchant’s yard which has been derelict for over 30 years. Discussions have been ongoing with the council to spruce up this entry point for thousands of commuters who use the East Croydon station. Take that, Bowie.
