You’ve probably already heard about the 18-inch rat that terrified a homeowner in Belsize Park by, err, staring through the window at her. *Cue brooding music*.
The critter’s been called ‘giant’ by various publications, who’ve questioned whether London is under attack from a new race of super-rats that will soon be big enough to ride like horses. Well, it turns out the beast isn’t actually abnormally huge. We spoke to Dr. Dougie Clarke, a rat expert from the University of Huddersfield, and he told us that it’s pretty normal for brown rats to grow that big.
He said: ‘These are normal sized rats that are being reported. Brown rats grow up to about 50cm from nose to tail if they are fully grown adults, so the ones being reported are within the normal size range. Rats are definitely not getting any bigger!’
Good news: no super rats. Bad news: all rats are fucking massive. Sleep tight.
