Fourth Plinth

At this morning’s grand unveiling of German artist Hans Haacke’s ‘Gift Horse’, the tenth Fourth Plinth commission, the Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: ‘There will be those of course who see this underfed beast, this emaciated quadruped as a warning, a memento mori, a symbol of the obsessive pursuit of austerity and the ‘George Osborne diet’ approach to life, but I say no, my friends, absolutely not.’ So what do you think of the bronze sculpture, which is based on an anatomical engraving by English painter George Stubbs? Is it the tonic we’ve been waiting for in these grim times? Or is it an invitation, as the artist hopes, to make connections and talk about art? Let’s saddle up for the debate to begin.
