These days, it feels like you can’t walk around London without some sort of niche café awaiting you. From cereal and porridge to board games, it feels like anyone with a bit of an obsession is opening shop and pulling in all the punters. But there had to be one that started it all. An original. An example for all. And that example, when it comes to crowd-funded gaffs at least, is Lady Dinah’s Cat Emporium.
It’s hard to believe that it was over two years ago that London’s famed cat café started its journey and even harder to believe that it’s been a year since it opened its doors to the public. After raising £109,510 through public donations on IndieGoGo, the city’s favourite cat lady, Lauren Pears, went through the arduous task of building the unusual hotspot and after over a year of permits, licenses and blockades, the doors were open. Since then, over 50,000 people have visited, two new additions have joined the feline family and one little kitty’s life was saved.
We popped down on Sunday to join in the celebrations and we’re happy to report that it’s still everything we wished for. Happy, fluffy furballs darting around, cats lazily napping in the corner, and fellow pussy lovers cooing between mouthfuls of cake. Nothing’s really changed since opening day, except that the menu’s grown and there are more of the little tykes to love. So, what are you waiting for? Don’t let it reach year two without popping down. The time is meow, after all.
