You don’t need to be a party animal to know that the city’s live music venues are under threat. It’s a sad epidemic. There has been a wave of high-profile closures recently, including the 12 Bar, Joiner’s Arms, Madame Jojo’s and Plastic People, with even more marked for closure this year.
The problem is so big that even Boris Johnson has noticed and he’s set up a task force to tackle the issue. About time. The new initiative will ‘look at steps the city can take to protect and secure its vital network of live music venues.’
In typically BoJo style, he described the city’s venues as the ‘teeming wombs of London talent’, saying: ‘They are where we hope to produce not just fantastic music now, but the next Rolling Stones, Clash, Adele, Ed Sheeran, or Sam Smith.’
