Photo of the day: bird-riding weasels are a national treasure

Remember the weasel riding a woodpecker that nearly broke the internet last week? Of course you do, it was brilliant. So brilliant in fact, that someone has put up a new sign in its honour where it was spotted (Hornchurch Park, out past Barking). The creators are petitioning the authorities to let the sign stay, a campaign we are 110 percent behind. The first person to graffiti in a tiny Vladimir Putin riding the weasel wins a free copy of Time Out!

Since Martin Le-May’s photo emerged online it has taken the world by storm, appearing on news bulletins and websites around the globe from the BBC to ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ in the USA.

Now Stephen Cross, a local resident and advertising creative at agency Karmarama wants to have the park declared the woodpecker-riding-weasel’s official home and even cheekily suggested it should be listed on the Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest.

‘It has taken something this extraordinary for people to realise just how great Hornchurch County Park and Hornchurch in general is, something we have known for a very long time’, said Cross.

The team behind the sign also hopes to submit an official classification to the Linnean Society of London to have the species officially recognised.
