Yet another one of our brilliant London arts venues is at risk of closure. Rich Mix in Shoreditch is under threat due to demands from the council for the venue to stump up a lump sum of cash that would bankrupt it. Offers of a long-term repayment plan have been rejected, meaning action needs to be taken now to stop the venue from being lost for good. To hold off the council’s plans and prove that the cinema and arts centre is essential for community relations and equal access to the arts in east London, Rich Mix needs you to sign a petition. They’ve already collected over 6,800 signatures in under a week, but they still need your support to reach their goal.
Just to give you an idea of what the venue means to London, it hosts over 650 arts events annually, a third of which are free. It also pumped £315,000 into artist and groups rehearsal and development space last year, and still managed to run with just 11 percent public funding. Not to mention that it’s a pretty awesome place to sit back and catch a flick, many of which are smaller productions that don’t screen at your average multiplex giant.
