Columbia Road Market - Joe Pickard

We asked London’s most distinctive Instagrammers to give us a tour of their favourite market through the lens of their smartphone camera – for a truly personal set of stall stories. Book designer Joe Pickard (@JosephOwen) shows us the best bits of Columbia Road Market.

‘Without a doubt, the main reason to visit Columbia Road is the flowers, and the street is a riot of colour, smells and sounds whatever the season. This is where I head to for hipster house plants, cacti and every type of bouquet imaginable. But look beyond the blooms and you’ll find it’s also a great place for a tasty bite to eat, watching buskers and indie shopping.’

In my basket: ‘It’s best to get there early to beat the crowds, but you can find a breakfast to suit all tastes here. I’ve been known to tuck into everything from cupcakes and bagels to battered prawns. Although the ever-inventive market traders are sure to entertain with their Essex accents and knockabout banter (‘Cheap enough to give to your mother-in-law! Two bunches a fivvvverrrr!’), I recommend slipping down the adjacent road, Ezra Street, to check out the street musicians; there’ll no doubt be a harp-playing chanteuse or two. My favourite spot for a caffeine fix is Captured By at the top end of the market – it’s a design store that serves excellent coffee through a dinky window.’

Columbia Rd, E2 7RG. Sun 8am-3pm.
