The timing couldn’t have been better. Just as it turned from coat weather to slightly-lighter-coat weather, the summer-long Udderbelly Festival officially launched last night with Pimm’s aplenty, and now the giant upturned purple cow (and its massive outdoor bar) is open to the public until July 19.Over the next three months you can catch circus troupes, family shows, cabaret acts and a whole herd of comedians in the 400-seat inflatable venue. For a taste of what’s to come, tonight’s Opening Gala has a packed line-up, including musical improv outfit The Showstoppers and dancer-magician Magical Bones.

Laughs-wise, the Udderbelly is effectively the biggest comedy festival in London. We’ve already picked our six must-see comedy shows, but we’ll also add silly physical duo the Pajama Men, London-loving Irishman Andrew Maxwell and magical maestro Pete Firman to that list. Oh, and smart stand-up Sara Pascoe! And triple Foster’s Award nominee James Acaster! We could go on…
