It’s a funny sort of week at the movies: with no major blockbusters on offer, the studios seem to be dumping a slew of fairly average products before the summer rush begins (and next week is set to be even worse).
The biggest release is ‘John Wick’, a deeply silly but highly enjoyable action flick which sees a back-with-a-bang Keanu Reeves playing an ex-assassin who seeks revenge on the Russian mobsters who poisoned his dog (seriously!). Our top picks, however, are Swedish black comedy ‘Force Majeure’, about the world’s most useless Dad, ‘Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck’, a new doc about the doomed Nirvana frontman, and ‘Jauja’, a powerful Argentinian period drama starring Viggo Mortensen.
Elsewhere, there’s disappointing work from Helen Mirren (flat courtroom tale ‘Woman in Gold’), Ethan Hawke (decent but drab drone drama ‘Good Kill’) and Ryan Gosling, who makes a complete hash of his directorial debut, ‘Lost River’. And if you’re desperate, there’s always ‘Hot Tub Time Machine 2’ – but the less said about that, the better…
