Battle your way through a busy London market and you’ll be overwhelmed by the endless variety. It’s this that makes the capital awesome. In a city of grey pavements and greyer skies, our markets are a flash flood of colours, smells and sounds. Get two people to explore the same market on the same day and they’ll come out with baskets filled with totally different items. It’s no surprise, then, that more than 84,000 people have used #BoroughMarket on Instagram, and nearly 50,000 have used #CamdenMarket.
We asked London’s most distinctive Instagrammers to give us a tour of their favourite market through the lens of their smartphone camera – for a truly personal set of stall stories. Anonymous Instagrammer @Clerkenwellboycec1 – who majors in mouthwatering close-ups – takes us around Maltby Street Market.
‘I often spend a few hours at Maltby Street Market on the weekends. Hidden under a series of railway arches, it’s the ultimate destination for lovers of food, with market stalls, pop-ups, little bars and cafés selling freshly baked goods, the finest smoked salmon, cured hams, cheese toasties, artisan chocolate, hand-crafted beers, meads and vintage-style gins.’
In my basket: ‘Don’t be put off by the queues at African Volcano. South African chef Grant Hawthorne’s Dirty Little Secret burgers with melted cheese, pulled pork and spicy sauce are worth the wait! The irresistible sourdough bread from St John Bakery is proved for more than 40 hours before being freshly baked on the premises. Stepping into Lassco is like walking into a museum. It sells a big range of antique plates, furniture, cinema chairs, reclaimed flags and floorboards. I love Bumpin Rinds‘ fresh green juice. It includes kale, mint, parsley, apple, ginger and lemon – and makes you feel instantly healthier. Hansen & Lydersen are a family smokehouse in Stoke Newington. Their salmon is cold-smoked using a unique blend of juniper and beechwood. Itís my favourite smoked salmon!’
Maltby St, SE1 3PA. Sat, 9am-3pm; Sun 11am-4pm.
