‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’: the new trailer is here

Posted at 7:20 pm, April 16, 2015 in Arts & Entertainment

The latest trailer for the year’s most anticipated blockbuster, ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, screened today at the Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, California, and was simultaneously uploaded online.

Just in case you’ve been living in a cave on Tatooine for the past two years, the film reunites original trilogy stars Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher (not to mention beloved sidekicks C-3PO, R2-D2 and Chewbacca), and also features a terrific cast of newcomers including Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver and Peckham’s very own John Boyega. Details of the plot are strictly under wraps, but here are five things we learned from watching the new trailer…

1. Harrison Ford looks pretty good for a guy who broke his ankle and crashed a plane into a golf course. Yes, Han Solo is back in this trailer – for all of two seconds – and he looks just as much of a scoundrel as ever. Oh, and he’s been reunited with his two loves: Chewbacca and the Millennium Falcon.

2. The practical sets do look amazing. JJ Abrams got a rousing cheer when he discussed how much he’d tried to avoid CGI, and judging from this trailer he’s done a fine job. Like the original movies, this universe looks lived-in.

3. The new villain looks amazing… but oddly similar to the Khan’s desert garb in ‘Star Trek 2′. Still, the trailer features a shot of Darth Vader’s burned helmet (as it were), which is pretty darn exciting.

4. JJ isn’t messing with the formula too much. The new movie may be set a few decades after the original trilogy, but there are still Star Destroyers, TIE Fighters and X-Wings aplenty. The stormtroopers have natty new uniforms, though.

5. We’re unbelievably excited. Okay, so we knew that going in, but it’s twice as true now. From the lightsabers to the spaceships, from John Boyega’s harried stormtrooper to Adam Driver’s masked villain, from the chunky sets to the glistening, almost ’70s- looking colour scheme, everything in this trailer just screams quality. Roll on December!!!
