After seven years of celebrating the best of London’s East End artists, Hackney WickED festival has been forced to cancel its 2015 event because of ‘ever-increasing’ production costs. Since 2009, the three-day festival has been promoting local talent and trying to save art spaces from redevelopment. But now the organisers have announced that the festival will ‘not go ahead in its full glory for 2015’.
In a statement, the organisers said: ‘Although the free-natured [sic] spirited, spontaneity and self-expression of the festival will be missed, it is time for the organisation to re-evaluate and adapt to the changing nature of Hackney Wick.’ But it’s not all doom and gloom, as they are planning to curate a programme of smaller events instead. They’ve also been given some Arts Council funding to carry out research and get feedback on how much people benefitted from the festival.
