There’s been a recent frenzy of activity in London’s tunnels, what with TfL’s plans to lease out Down Street tube station, a new arts venue opening in part of the Thames tunnel and a pop-up cinema at Charing Cross station. And in today’s below-the-ground news, the vaults under Camden Lock might be turned into an underground village. There’s one slight hitch in that the vaults are currently half filled with water, which you probably wouldn’t fancy swimming around in. But a plan has been drawn up by Market Tech Holdings, which owns Camden Market, to pump out the water and create spaces for restaurants, markets and exhibitions in the network of tunnels that haven’t been in use for decades. If the development gets the green light it could be ready to go by 2017 – so tunnel enthusiasts should watch this space.
