Ordinarily, we’d be a bit unbovved about a new film about 1960s London gangsters Reggie and Ronnie Kray. What more is there to say about the East End’s most sadistic twins? That they were diamond geezers who loved their mum and kept the streets safe? But hold the cynicism. ‘Legend’, which comes to cinemas in September, stars Tom Hardy, playing not one, but both Krays. And now the first trailer has landed, looking pretty tasty (and we’re not just talking about Tom Hardy in a whistle and flute). The Londoner made his career portraying the brute rage of career criminal Charles Bronson in ‘Bronson’, and judging from what we see here, we can expect a full-throttle performance from him as Ronnie and Reggie, who ruled the East End with a rod of iron (quite literally at times). The biopic focuses on the Krays’ rise to gangland notoriety in the ’50s and ’60s and is written and directed by ‘LA Confidential’ co-screenwriter Brian Helgeland – and it definitely looks like it’s got a noir-ish feel. We’re looking forward to seeing Hardy in this one – twice, but definitely not nice.
‘Legend’ opens in cinemas on Sep 11 2015.
