Given the massive black cloud still hanging over London following the depressing election results, it seems an appropriate time to announce that London is getting a series of ‘death cafés’. Yes, you read that right. But despite what it sounds like, death cafés all doom and gloom. As part of Dying Matters Awareness Week (May 18–24), death cafés are popping up across town including one in Hackney at St Joseph’s Hospice on May 19. Since 2011, organisers have been hosting death cafés all over the world to give people a chance to talk openly about death and dying over a cup of tea and cake. Okay, it’s not the cheeriest of topics but at least it’s not another novelty café serving black tea out of ironic mugs.
Book your place at St Joseph’s Hospice by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. The Death Café is on May 19 at St Joseph’s Hospice, Mare Street, E8 4SA.
