What’s that rumbling sound? Thunder? An explosion? Or the mutant armies of the apocalypse coming to drag you to screaming vehicular hell? Yes, ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ is the big hitter at UK cinemas this week, and it’s an absolute pedal-to-the-metal belter, earning five stars from us for its relentless action, spectacular desert visuals and sense of giddy mayhem. After this, the new ‘Star Wars’ movie is going to have to work damn hard to claim the crown of 2015’s best blockbuster.
But if you’re not a fan of guys in leather kecks jumping about on speeding trucks (we understand – sort of), there’s still plenty to choose from. ‘Pitch Perfect 2’ is a brilliant follow-up to 2012’s a capella-themed comedy hit, featuring a star turn from the bolshy Rebel Wilson. ‘Clouds of Sils Maria’ is a superb, subtle and quietly sexy melodrama starring Juliette Binoche and Kristen Stewart. And ‘The Tribe’ is one of the year’s most confrontational films, a ferocious, unforgiving drama set at a school for the deaf in Ukraine.
