Elephant and Castle hates Foxtons: squatters take over Elephant and Castle pub in estate agent protest
A couple of weeks ago we told that you the home of UK garage and the pub that gave Elephant and Castle its name is to be turned into a branch of Foxtons. Looks like we weren’t the only ones upset by that news. A group of squatters under the name Free University of London have moved into the pub and taken it over in an attempt to run it as a community centre instead.
According to flyers they were handing out on our visit today, ‘we would like this space to be accessible to everyone’ and they’re running a daily programme of events including community breakfasts in the former beer garden, with local residents invited to come in and hang out in the space. If you’d been to that pub any time in the last ten years, you might think, ‘Hang out in the Elephant and Castle pub? I’d rather stab myself in the bumhole with a fork!’ But the friendly crowd and easy-going vibe of people chatting and hanging out whilst working on laptops made it feel more welcoming than the pub’s previous landlords had managed to make it feel in years.
Sadly, their Facebook and Twitter accounts are works in progress, so at the moment, the signs put up outside the venue are the only good guide to their events schedule. But we can tell you this for sure: it’s a bigger community asset than a Foxton’s would be.
