To celebrate the official start of summer, The Book Club in Shoreditch are putting on a fête, cleverly named ‘A Fête Worse Than Death’, that will blow your Morris Dancing bells off. The car park opposite the bar will be transformed into a village fête where you can forget your city woes and revel in food, cider and games. There’ll also be performances from folk artists, a may pole and prizes for the people who have the best village-inspired outfit.

But the best part will be the food offered by ‘The Foragers’, experts in wild food. For those at one with nature, there’s plenty to take you back to your wild roots, such as pigeon and prune pasties (hopefully they won’t be the pigeons sitting around Trafalgar Square). All of the food will be foraged and the menu will change depending on what is found. So dig out your tweed, wellies, and flat caps and we’ll see you in the queue for a swing around the may pole after one too many ciders.

For more details on The Book Club’s May Day celebrations see their Facebook page

This weekend, Dalston is the place to be whether you’re up raving it up all day and night or after a slightly more sedate time to keep the kids (and yourself) entertained.

For all the gig fans out there, popular mini-fest Land of Kings gets compressed into one day this year starting at the earlier time of 2pm, making for a perfect Bank Holiday Sunday blowout. The action happens up and down Kingsland High Street, hence the name – and we mean up and down: events take place everywhere from the dark basement that is The Alibi to the (hopefully) sunny eminence of Dalston Roof Gardens. With cutting-edge music from disco to psych rock, musical bingo, haiku debating, poetry, karaoke and more, Land of Kings is a compelling argument that Dalston still isn’t dead.

Or alternatively, head down on Monday May 6, when the people behind Land of Kings bring together the best that Hackney has to offer younger culture fans (aged two to 12) for this new one-day festival, which takes place across a variety of indoor and outdoor venues in Dalston. Expect a great range of imaginative activities, immersive theatre and workshops with events from top names including Punchdrunk and Lost Picture Show. Young festival-goers will be able to choose from flower-seed bombing, coffee composting, pirate school, bread-head mask making, a video dance party, reggae nursery rhymes, family-friendly raves Momma Loves and Disco Loco and plenty more. Ensuring everyone has plenty of energy for the day’s activities, Street Feast will offer a wide selection of sustenance from Hackney’s finest purveyors of tempting homemade food.

For info, see Land of Kings and Land of Kids listings.
Easter weekend is a traditional excuse to get out and about – but this is on the premise that it should also be a tad warmer. It isn’t, so perhaps staying inside for frivolities makes more sense. Sir John Soane’s Museum on Lincoln’s Inn Fields could be just the place to fend off the frostbite. This treasure trove of Soane’s keepsakes is hosting Easter fun times a tad later (from April 3-11) so you can extend the Bank Holiday vibes for a bit longer throughout the week. There’ll be jewellery, amulet and badge making classes inspired by Roman, Egyptian and Greek objects in the collection. Drawing and print sessions are also on the agenda. If anything, these events are a good excuse to have a good old nose through Soane’s amazing array of possessions and to stay nice and toasty warm. Tickets will be popular so book now. Adam Bloodworth

The Lost & Found Egg Roll is an Easter institution that’s burst out of its shell every Bank Holiday Friday for the past seven years. Organised by a collective of professional wallies who spend the summer putting smiles on faces at festivals like Bestival and Secret Garden Party, this informal gathering at the top of Primrose Hill makes better use of the humble egg than an entire series of The Great British Bake-Off.

The main event is the roll of course – one for grown-ups and one for kids – which kicks off 2.30pm sharp. The aim of the game is to get your egg down the hill first and in one piece, so make sure to paint yours in go faster stripes to pick it out of the eggy melée.

As well as 3-legged egg and spoon races, there’s also Russian Roulegge which can go one of two ways for its brave participants – either a safe hard-boiled squish to the forehead or the wild splatter of raw protein all over your face for the unlucky ones…

Because of the cold, the eggcitement moves indoors to The Washington pub nearby for the eighth annual Best Dressed Egg Competition. With previous winners including Freggy Kruger and Eggward Scissorhands, competition for the top prize is clucking ridiculous…

The Eggs Factor

…and last year’s Damien Hirst-inspired winner…

After all that (and because the Oval Space and King’s Cross mega-club Egg were booked), the party moves on to Hysteria from 6pm for an evening of disco-fuelled silliness. Totally free – no eggspence spared. Oliver Keens

Roll up, roll up, Time Out Tuesday is nearly upon us. And this week’s magazine is particularly special. First off, it’s a double issue, so that’s two weeks of good times from just one magazine. Remarkable. Secondly, it is packed full of stuff for you to do over the precious long weekend – and all the other days too, of course. Thirdly, we’ve tracked down the seven weird wonders of London (there’s some we’d never even heard of in there!). Fourthly, there are tigers in the pages of the magazine. Real tigers! No, I’m not high. All you need to do is download the Aurasma app (it’s available for iPhone4 and above, iPad 2 and above, and high-powered Android devices) and you’ll be able to access all the interactive content hidden throughout the magazine.
At last, it’s here. Summer. Which can only mean one thing: time for a cool bevvie in a nice sunny spot. If you’re not sure where to start, never fear, Time Out is here. We’ve rounded up a handful of terraces, gardens (and even one conservatory) where you can lap up the sunshine. Oh, and the beer here’s not bad either.

Royalist or Republican everyone loves a holiday and of course, how you spend it is up to you but we're giving you a few ideas

The four day weekend has finally arrived. PHEW! Royalist or Republican, everyone loves a holiday. How you spend it is up to you but if you are lacking inspiration, here’s a few ideas that won’t break the bank. Sunday, the day of the official Thames Jubilee Pageant and the fourth annual Big Lunch, is shaping up to be THE BIG ONE. We’ve compiled a handy list of all the best places to catch the flotilla if you are so inclined. If you aren’t planning on heading down to the river, there are chances a-plenty to break bread with a neighbour (check the nearest tree for details of your local street party). If that just won’t cut it this weekend (nb. we don’t endorse this lack of community spirit), then you can always crash someone else’s.

- If you’re based south, head to Bellenden Road in Peckham where the street of galleries, cafes and boutiques will be erupting into its own Big Lunch in an open and arty affair.

- If you fancy yourself as a bit of a Stokey dweller, then N16 will be a hive of activity, with the Stoke Newington Lit Fest jostling for space on Church Street with Sunday’s Big Lunch. The Street Party has a 50′s theme, so dig out your vintage frocks, if your that way inclined.

- A little further north, Holloway are muscling in on the act, their 10 day arts festival coincides nicely with the Jubilee Bank Holiday. If you missed out on wristbands for the Book Club Street Party then have no fear as the Hackney Colliery Band will be warming up their brass in N7 at the Mayton Street Festival on Saturday. Head to Whittington Park on Sunday for the 4th annual big day out.

- Hildreth Street in Balham is also embracing the 50′s theme and coming over all vintage with its street party offering. You can bag a bargain, get a makeover at its 50′s salon or go the way of many a desperate housewife at the Mother’s Ruin gin and tea bar.

- If you fancy something altogether grander, then perhaps Piccadilly is the place for you. Stretching from Piccadilly Circus to St James’s Street, with participating local businesses including The Ritz and Fortnum & Mason. If you want a seat at the table, register at picadillybigjubileelunch.org, and you will be allocated an hour long time slot to scoff your sandwiches. Ellie Clayton

That is by no means all folks, check out the full list of things going on over the weekend.

Top street parties, best pubs for flotilla gazing, queen facts, drag queens and how to go on a right royal bender. Now if we can just get through the rest of the week…sigh.
