The London property market is going down the toilet. Literally. The Victorians went through a phase of building amazing underground public toilets that celebrated London’s advanced sewage system. Sadly, most of them were left to decay and are now chained up and shut down, but in recent years a fair few have been saved and made into new public spaces. Ginglik on Shepherd’s Bush Green is a club with live music and a comedy night, meanwhile Friends of Kennington Cross are currently turning their 1898, Grade ll listed abandoned toilet into an arts and heritage, exhibition and events venue. While other examples of toilet transformations include a beauty salon, a sandwich shop and a curry house, these old bogs are now even being turned into luxury (!) living spaces. Jude Brosnan

As if smokers didn’t have enough to worry about what with all the related diseases, expense, worry about starting fires, chilly outdoor conditions and scary pictures on fag packets. It seems certain councils in London are upping their earnings by employing wardens to stalk smokers and fine them £80 for dropping their butts. The BBC reported that ‘Islington Council issued 2,348 fines last year – compared to 122 and 78 in neighbouring boroughs Hackney and Camden.’ However, smokers complain that councils often don’t provide adequate bins for cigarette extinguishing. Either it’s a money grabbing scheme or they just care about people’s health. You decide. Jude Brosnan

January 28 is the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’. That’s 200 blissful years worth of perving on Mr Darcy (eighteen years drooling over on Colin Firth). Here are some ways you can celebrate its bicentenary. Jude Brosnan

1. Send a letter

We don’t like to be the bearers of bad news but Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Why not balance out the red enveloped rhyming slush by writing an eloquently written letter to a friend . Make it extra special by using one of Royal Mail‘s commemorative Austen stamps.

2. Watch the Playmobil version

Check out this video of the famous ‘wet Mr Darcy emerging from the lake’ scene. And we thought Playmobil was just for kids.

3. Wear Mr Darcy around your neckRather than printing off a tiny picture you’ve found on Google searching for ‘Mr Darcy’, cutting it out carefully and Pritt-Sticking it into a locket, The Hoolala Alphabet ‘D is for Darcy Pride and Prejudice Locket Charm Necklace’ actually looks pretty nice. Available at Bouf £38.

4. See the play

June is a long way off so ‘book tickets to see the play and pray for good weather’ might be a better name. Regents Park Open Air Theatre is showing ‘Pride and Prejudice’ from June 20 until July 20. For more details, see openairtheatre.com.

5. Put the whole book on your wall

The Literary Gift Company do a poster which is composed entirely from the body text of Pride and Prejudice. This is the whole novel from start to finish. Kind of like a map but wordier.

6. Get the t-shirt

7.
8. Collect them all to have the most beautiful bookshelf in town. £14.99 from Penguin Books.

10. Watch the DVD.

Choose between Colin Firth and Keira Knightley. Or go way back and watch the 1940s version starring Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier. Hell, go all out and watch them all, then watch the Bollywood-style ‘Bride and Prejudice’!

This night of multidisciplinary fun at Marylebone Gardens – aka the old BBC London studios – probably wouldn’t do much to gee up poor old George Entwhistle. But for the rest of us ‘BBC Time Warp’, Stamp Collective’s evening of performance pieces, live music, comedy and cabaret themed around the artists’ childhood memories of the Beeb on Thursday (Nov 22) should be a gloriously nostalgic hoot. We’re promised riffs on the Tardis, the ‘Blue Peter’ garden, Michael Fish’s weather prediction skills, and more. There’s a free drink on the door and secret DJ to be announced (provided they’ve not been arrested for anything untoward).

It was 90 years ago today that BBC radio burst onto our airwaves bringing the nation together through crackly broadcasted speech

Today we’re so used to sharing collective live experiences through TV, the radio and online that it’s hard to imagine what it would be like to have to find out breaking news through good old fashioned newspapers or word of mouth. But it was 90 years ago today that BBC radio burst onto our airwaves bringing the nation together through crackly broadcasted speech. Radio still makes up a large part of the British Broadcasting Corporation output and now, with over 60 stations (network, local, national and international), it’s still going strong. To celebrate, the beeb are putting on a series of programs looking back over the last 90 years, but more excitingly, today at 5.33pm, there will be a 3 minute simultaneous broadcast across all 60 stations – Radio Reunited – based on the importance of listening to each other. Listeners were asked to submit their thoughts for the momentous broadcast and the best will be aired to a soundtrack by Damon Albarn, alongside Tony Blackburn reminiscing about being the first voice ever heard on Radio 1, all you ever wanted to know about the BBC’s first ever transmitter 2 L O and everything else they can pack into three short minutes. Adjust your wireless accordingly.

The BBC, using data collected by monitoring firm musicmetric.com, has created an online tool to work out the most pirated artist in a given area.

The BBC, using data collected by monitoring firm musicmetric.com, has created an online tool to work out the most pirated artist in a given area. It reveals that, in the City of London (and nationwide), Ed Sheeran’s album ‘Plus’ is by far the most popular illegal download. The supposedly trendy residents of Hoxton have been downloading chart-smashing rent-a-rapper Pitbull. Round the corner from the Time Out offices, the people of Bloomsbury have been busy downloading Lady Gaga, while – worse still – in Fulham they’ve been pilfering tracks by Scottish 500-mile-walkers The Proclaimers! (It’s only about 400 miles by foot from Leith to Fulham Broadway, so the Reid twins have still got a way to go.) The app has also analysed the results to rank the most piratical cities in the UK, with Manchester coming in at number one. London doesn’t feature, but that’s probably only because, unlike other cities, its statistics have been divided between different districts.

Discover the most pirated artist near you at the BBC website by typing in your postcode underneath Ed Sheeran’s chin.
