Girls and boys, it’s time for a champagne supernova to celebrate the end of an epic battle that has divided the UK indie scene for almost 20 years. Noel Gallagher has asked Blur’s Damon Albarn to perform at his Teenage Cancer Trust gig this Saturday (March 23) at the Royal Albert Hall. Not only does this mean that their rivalry is over, but that that falling out with your best friend from school over you preferring ‘Parklife’ to ‘Definitely Maybe’ was for nothing. And it doesn’t just end there. There are rumours that the alternative rock legends may even play a song together, but what could that song be? We’ve put together a list of odds for the possible contenders so you can whet your appetite for the momentous occasion. Carly-Ann Clements

From alchemic opera to Eric Idle and bhangra dancers, it’s fair to say 2012′s been a varied year for music. Time Out’s Music & Clubs editor Jonny Ensall picks some of the best and worst music moments of 2012.

The Crackers

Damon Albarn
The Blur frontman should put his feet up over Christmas. This year he staged an opera (‘Dr Dee’), organised an African music-themed train tour around the UK (Africa Express), made a Blur reunion happen in Hyde Park and, just last month, helped the great Bobby Womack mount his comeback at Hammersmith Apollo.

Triangles
Triangle-obsessed indiefolk act Alt-J took the Mercury Prize (and made our best albums of the year list) but it was Robin Carolan’s Tri-Angle Records label which really put three-sided shapes on the agenda. Acts on his roster, including Holy Other, Evian Christ and AlunaGeorge, helped define the sound of progressive electronic music in 2012.

Afrobeats
The song of the Olympics was not Muse’s official anthem, ‘Survival’ (a creative statement about as subtle as Darth Vader’s Death Star) it was D’Banj’s Afrobeats classic ‘Oliver Twist’. This hit represented just the cusp of a wave of chart house-flavoured West African bangers that kept the capital dancing all summer.

Liz Frazer
Antony Hegarty, curator of this year’s Meltdown festival, pulled off a real coup when he persuaded the shy, ex-Cocteau Twins vocalist on to the stage at the Royal Festival Hall for two nights in June. Expectations were high, but they were met by Fraser at her quiet, elegant, angelic best.

Rinse comes of age
The pirate radio stationturned- tastemaking institution – responsible for giving Katy B and Jessie Ware a leg up to the top – celebrated turning 18 this year by staging a show inside Tate Modern’s newest space, The Tanks, and holding a blowout at Brixton Academy. London wouldn’t be the same without them.

The Turkeys

Olympic Closing Ceremony
Having Russell Brand mime The Beatles, pushing Jessie J’s nearly nude arse on stage, allowing George Michael to perform new material – all were programming decisions we find it hard to forgive. But having Eric Idle jump out of his skin at the sight of a troupe of bhangra dancers – a move straight out of the ‘Love Thy Neighbour’ handbook of ’70s sitcom humour – tipped this ceremony into travesty. Jonny Ensall

Have we missed any? What were you favourite music moments of 2012?

It was 90 years ago today that BBC radio burst onto our airwaves bringing the nation together through crackly broadcasted speech

Today we’re so used to sharing collective live experiences through TV, the radio and online that it’s hard to imagine what it would be like to have to find out breaking news through good old fashioned newspapers or word of mouth. But it was 90 years ago today that BBC radio burst onto our airwaves bringing the nation together through crackly broadcasted speech. Radio still makes up a large part of the British Broadcasting Corporation output and now, with over 60 stations (network, local, national and international), it’s still going strong. To celebrate, the beeb are putting on a series of programs looking back over the last 90 years, but more excitingly, today at 5.33pm, there will be a 3 minute simultaneous broadcast across all 60 stations – Radio Reunited – based on the importance of listening to each other. Listeners were asked to submit their thoughts for the momentous broadcast and the best will be aired to a soundtrack by Damon Albarn, alongside Tony Blackburn reminiscing about being the first voice ever heard on Radio 1, all you ever wanted to know about the BBC’s first ever transmitter 2 L O and everything else they can pack into three short minutes. Adjust your wireless accordingly.

Having been ‘Under the Westway’, taken ‘a drive to Primrose Hill’ and ‘been up the Thames to find a taxi rank’, there’s every chance that Blur’s journey to Hyde Park on Sunday to headline the alternative Closing Ceremony concert might be their last. Indelibly linked to this city, they’ve captured London’s highs and lows and ‘London Loves’ them right back. We decided to plot their history via another great emblematic institution – the London Underground – all the way from their Essex roots right through, sob, ‘To The End’…

Jamie has created seven quirky peeps who have influenced the capital from Dickensian London to the present day, via a dandy, 60′s chick, SKA dude, punk rocker and 80′s cool cat. We asked what you wanted to find out from the great draftsman and put in a few questions of our own which he answers in the exclusive edit of the behind-the-scenes interview below. Sadly we never found out who did all the washing up when he lived with Damon or any other domestic gossip. Sorry folks, next time.

Crazy huh? You can tell it’s getting closer because the muscle and Lycra® quota in TV adverts has gone through the roof. There’s also a load more chatter among Londoners about the big event which ranges from pant-wetting excitement to wide-eyed terror. To celebrate this spread of emotions and such an important landmark, we’ve put together five reasons to get excited about London 2012 and five reasons why you might be moving to Ipswich for a month.

We want to hear from you. Let us know if you’re feeling or fearing the Olympics – cast your vote or add a comment below.

Fill out my Wufoo form!

Five reasons to get excited

1/It’s the biggest sporting spectacle ever. Thousands of athletes at the very top of their game come together to show off in a pretty bizarre range of sports (and I’m not just talking about Modern Pentathlon) right on your doorstep. Double wow.
2/The Olympic venues look ace. I had a sneaky peek out of Westfield Stratford City the other day (just browsing, thanks for asking) and the Olympic Park is already looking amazing. Venues like the Velodrome and The Aquatics Centre are works of art.
3/It will be a success. No one can argue that the 2002 Commonwealth Games and Euro ’96 weren’t great and London 2012 is likely to be even better.
4/The Torch Relay. Getting together with friends and cheering on the procession of a flaming torch. THAT’S what memories are really made of.
5/It’s not just about sport. There are hundreds of amazing events/exhibitions and activities taking place in the city as part of the Cultural Olympiad including Damon Albarn’s Doctor Dee and international Shakespeare celebration Globe to Globe.

Five reasons to run away

1/You won’t be able to avoid it. The BBC has added an extra 24 channels to its Olympic coverage to show every second of the event. Add to that online coverage, Olympic themed restaurants and pubs, adverts and tubes full of people with flags painted to their faces, it’s going to be tough for those of you who don’t like sport.
2/It’s going to be busy. Even with the help of TfL’s spectator journey planner, expect your Facebook wall and Twitter timeline to be dominated by deep seated fury; ‘OMG… been waiting for a train at London Bridge for like 2 days. I’ve already missed Deal or No Deal ffs. #olympictransportrage‘
3/The weather will not be good. The exact forecast is yet to be delivered but I can pretty much guarantee it’ll be either too hot or just a bit rainy and crap.
4/Olympic tat overload. Everyone likes novelty gifts but the Olympics is going to make the Royal Wedding merch look like your local cake sale. Olympic toilet roll anyone? It’s very strong.
5/You don’t have tickets. Resentment is never good.

Tickets go on sale this Friday 4th November for Damon Albarn's magical, mystical opera Dr.Dee at the ENO.

Tickets go on sale on Friday 4 November for Damon Albarn’s magical, mystical opera ‘Dr.Dee’ at the ENO. Blur fans may find themselves sitting shoulder to shoulder with seasoned opera buffs at the London Coliseum next July, as the Blur frontman’s second foray into the operatic world receives its London premiere. After tackling the Tang Dynasty via Manga and a Madarin libretto in 2007′s ‘Monkey: Journey to the West’ (with the help of his Gorillaz collaborator Jamie Hewlett), Albarn has turned his attention firmly back to Blighty. Dr. Dee was a real-life 16th century mathematician, astronomer and spy who dabbled in the dark arts while serving as a courtier to Elizabeth I. Perhaps Albarn feels some affinity with this Renaissance man, as he will play a prominent role as the troubadour-narrator. Sell your soul for a ticket if you must, but get in quick. Kirsty McQuire
