If only the City was run with the efficiency of the Wurst Club; this new purveyor of the great German ‘wurst’ is a model of teutonic efficiency and civility that would make Angela Merkel proud. It’s fast food, so don’t get any ideas about lingering: in traditional German sausage-stand style, there are counters, but no seats. In spite of diners being made to feel slightly like, well, a sausage in a sausage factory, the cooking is spot-on. We enjoyed our riesenbockwurst, an extra-long (riesen means ‘giant’) hot-dog where the thick, smokey casing gave way to a juicy pork centre. Instead of a bun, this came in its birthday suit, with only a layer of delicate, caraway-seed-flecked sauerkraut to cover its modesty. Equally enjoyable was an own-made potato salad, made to a traditional recipe with chunks of potato, boiled egg and sweet gherkins wrapped up in a creamy mayonnaise coat. The unflappable staff switch effortlessly from Deutsch to jocular English, treating the incoming City boys – many of them slick German bankers – like old friends. Tania Ballantine

We’ve been putting a brave face on this frugal, healthy January business, but it’s getting really hard to bear. So this already exciting news is even more welcome: you can have steak for dinner tonight. For FREE. Flat Iron, the new no-bookings steak restaurant in Soho, are kindly offering everybody free Wagyu Picana steak today from 5pm, just to cheer us all up. Understandably (it’s free meat) you’ll probably have to queue and although it might not be the biggest steak of your life, once you’re in all you have to pay for are your drinks and sides.

Get down to Flat Iron on 17 Beak Street from 5pm today (Mon 21) for your free wagyu.

It’s here: the latest venture from the meat-lovin’ crew. First came Meat Wagon (a roving burger truck), then Meat Liquor (burgers and booze), followed by Meat Market (above a Covent Garden market) and, now, Meat Mission – housed in a former Christian mission building in Hoxton. It’s in danger of being too trendy for its own good and the food was hit and miss on our visit, but the darkly lit, atmospheric premises make for an appealing drinking den.

Ever fancied having a go at de-boning a leg of lamb? Well, you’re in luck. Quality Standard beef and lamb are putting on a couple of butchery courses in Acton on November 17 to help you get the hang of some basic techniques. Fronted by Danny Lidgate of Lidgates Butchers in Holland Park, the two-hour classes will include tips on how to choose a good quality meat, demonstrations on different cuts of lamb and beef and what to do with them, plus a chance to butterfly a leg of lamb, which you get to take home at the end of the class. At £25 it’s a bit of a bargain.

Nick Andrews must have stood in queues for a worrying proportion of his time to get to all the burger places he's covered on Hamburger Me, and frankly that only strengthens our trust in his burger opinion.

There are a great many experts in the world, on a great many subjects. While we admire their dedication to whichever cause, their obsessions are often a bit obscure to bring joy to many others. But burgers? Now THAT is an obsession we can get behind. And our mouths around. It seems the rest of London feels the same, as meaty pop-ups are gathering longer queues than Alton Towers (well, maybe collectively anyway…). Nick Andrews must have stood in queues for a worrying proportion of his time to get to all the burger places he’s covered on Hamburger Me, and frankly that only strengthens our trust in his burger opinion. Here are his five secret London spots. Ashleigh Arnott

Leather Lane Market
‘A vibrant street food and clothing market in the heart of the city that runs daily during the week. Amongst the street food carts and hawkers is my favourite non-burger offering – Daddy Donkey, a burrito and fajita truck – which churns out some kick-ass Mexican food. As well as the varied food stalls, there are also a spattering of fantastic independent cafes like Prufrock and The Department of Coffee and Social Affairs – both of which are popular lunchtime haunts.’

Wenlock and Essex
‘One of my favourite chefs in London, James Morgan, is resident at the Wenlock and Essex and has managed to win places in my top 10 burgers for two fantastic creations – a braised fore-rib cheeseburger, and the ‘Sloppy Joe’. The Wenlock is situated on Essex road, Islington, so it’s off the well beaten burger track (yes, there is such a thing) but well worth a visit. James is often experimenting with his burgers and sides, so you may find delicacies like braised oxtail doughnuts on the menu when you pop in. There’s also a great range of beers from local microbreweries, craft gins, and other independent drinks to keep you happy while your burger digests.’

Honest Burgers, Brixton
‘It ain’t so secret, but for those who manage to make the trek out to the original Honest Burgers site in Brixton Market, they’re still flipping some flipping amazing burgers. Honest do burgers with a distinctly British twist – think mature cheddar, british back bacon, and onion relish all served on blue rimmed enamel crockery. The buzz of Brixton Market is well documented, and Honest Burgers in Brixton is a pretty special place.’

Secret Shake Menu at The Diner
‘OK, so I’m cheating a bit here, it’s not the American-style diner chain that’s the secret, but their secret shake menu, which covers a range of blended and ‘hard’ shakes that include: the Oreo (chocolate and vanilla ice cream with nutella), the snickers (chocolate icecream, nutella, peanut butter, and maple), the Kraken (kraken rum, banana ice cream, lime and maple), and my favourite the Choc Orange (triple sec and chocolate ice cream). Fortunately they also do some good signature burgers, try the Diablo, so you can get your burger on as well as a seriously good malty shake.’

Burger Bear
‘Burger Bear’s chief architect is bearded Bristolian Tom and he’s about as nice a guy as you could hope to be creating great burgers for you. His Grizzly Bear (not a euphemism) is a smoky, brooding creation that contains his own recipe bacon jam, and double oak smoked bacon. All his ingredients are sourced from within the M25 (with the exception of his lettuce, shipped from the distant climes of Cambridge) making food miles a priority. Over the summer he was serving his wares at Red Market, Old St. but he’s currently at Camden Lock and has an exciting new venture up his sleeve, so make sure you get involved by following him on Twitter @burgerbeartom.’

Read more from Nick at hamburger-me.com or follow @hamburgerme on Twitter. Then read about the Time Out Food team’s favourite London burgers.

Well, it’s pretty much inevitable. At some point in our lifetime we’re all going to become flesh-eating zombies so we might as well get used to the taste now, right? Maybe not. But for those with a carnivorous hunger and a macabre sense of humour, then we’ve got something for you. To celebrate the launch of Resident Evil 6, a pop-up morgue and ‘human butchery’ will open in Smithfield Market this Friday and Saturday (September 28-29) where patrons will be encouraged to sample and buy an array of edible human limbs, with all the money going to the the Limbless Association. And if you’re a fan of the game, there are lectures at the St. Bartholomew’s Hospital Pathology Museum which will explore some of the themes covered in the series. Carly-Ann Clements

Are DJing and brewing artisan coffee the pastimes of last year, to be replaced by something as banal as flipping patties of minced beef on a grill? You’d think so, judging by the number of new burger joints that have popped up in the last few months. We’ve tried most of them; some of them great, some of them not, but Dirty Burger takes the patty to new heights in Kentish Town.

The Gory Gourmet food truck is in Lower Marsh Street today, Thursday Aug 23.

We have been offered some dodgy meals in London before, but never have we come across a menu including brain burgers, thyroid nuggets and skewered hearts. The Gory Gourmet food truck (devised by Street Kitchen’s Mark Jankel) took the current meaty trend to a whole new level when they pitched up in Camden Lock Market today to serve ‘offally good’ fast food to the zombies of Camden. Passers by were intrigued but not many dared to actually chomp on a crispy brain dipper. On biting into a thyroid nugget, one brave soul remarked ‘Oh, it’s very soft’. If you missed out today and think you can stomach it, they’ll be dishing out more free meaty morsels including chunks of brain in BBQ sauce and pig’s feet nugget at Waterloo’s Lower Marsh Market tomorrow from 12.30 to promote the release of zombie thriller ‘The Walking Dead Season 2′. Sonya Barber

For info, see facebook.com/TheWalkingDeadUK.

Calf brain anyone?

This looks a lot more appealing:
