There may be a certain amount of diplomatic sabre-rattling between our two nations at the moment, but that’s no reason not to enjoy the fruits of Argentina’s booming film industry with a superb weekend-long festival at the Ritzy cinema in Brixton (April 19-22). And while you’re at it, why not sign up to win a box of Argentina’s finest Malbec wine courtesy of Bibendum? The festival kicks off on April 19 with a screening of huge homegrown hit ‘Chinese Takeaway’ (above), the likeably comic story of an unlikely friendship. Highlights over the weekend include award-winner ‘Back to Stay’, about three sisters undergoing major life changes, and ‘Las Acacias’, a gorgeously easygoing road movie.

For info on the festival, see timeout.com/film. To win the wine plus a pair of tickets to the Sunday screening of ‘Back to Stay’, answer the question below by 6pm on Tuesday April 17. Winners will be picked at random and informed on Wednesday April 18.

This competition is now closed.

Celebrate London's vibrant indie & arthouse cinema scene this weekend as part of Time Out's 101 Things to do in London guide.

As the summer slowly fades into autumn and the last of the CGI-heavy blockbusters vie for audience’s hard-earned cash, it’s worth remembering that there is an alternative to the flood of mainstream Hollywood offerings. With the recent London riots affecting the UK film industry in a big way (many smaller, specialist distributors lost their entire stock in the Sony DADC fire and cinema attendances dropped by 25% on Tuesday as film-lovers took the decision to stay at home), there’s never been a more crucial time to support the capital’s independent cinemas. Offering everything from old-school classics like Fritz Lang’s ‘Metropolis’ (above) to new independant and arthouse film, London is blessed with a wide array of fantastic exhibitors providing every style and genre a cinephile could ever wish for. Here’s ten of the best:

Phoenix in East Finchley
Rio in Dalston
Curzon Soho
BFI Southbank
ROXY Bar & Screen
Ritzy Brixton
Cine Lumiere
Screen on the Green
Portobello Pop Up Cinema
Riverside Studios

Over 6 consecutive days from today (to June 9), it will screen each of Araki’s freaky flicks daily at 6.30pm. It’s a chance to catch up on alterno classics like ‘The Living End’, ‘Nowhere’ and his 2007 breakthrough hit, ‘Mysterious Skin’ (above). As an added bonus, all films will be screened with a pre-recorded intro from Araki himself plus pre-film talks from a variety of guests.

To mark the occasion, a host of exciting screenings and events take place here throughout the year, kicking off with a double bill tomorrow of FW Murnau’s swoon-inducing 1927 romantic classic, ‘Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans’, alongside Luis Buñuel & Salvador Dalí’s surreal short, ‘Un Chien Andalou’, from 1928. Ace accompanists Neil Brand and Jeff Davenport offer an extra layer of live musical texture to this pair of classics.
