The past year has been a momentous one for London: sit-ins, strikes, demonstrations, rioting and royal (as well as not so royal) snogs all hit the headlines during 2011. The year ahead promises much drama of its own (with the mayoral election in May and the Olympics in July for starters) but in the meantime here are some standout images from an unforgettable 12 months.
Dale Farm, Essex, October 19
A campaigner brandishes a wooden cross as barricades burn during the eviction of 90 families from the Travellers’ site at Dale Farm. The clearance marks the end of a ten-year battle between Basildon Council and the site’s residents, who bought a former scrapyard on greet belt land in 2001 and established their caravans there.
