Take two media-savvy brothers, one three-wheeled Italian van, a keen interest in pizza and an epic journey across Italy back to London – and you’ve got the essence of Pizza Pilgrims. Brothers Thom and James Elliott decided to buy their little Piaggio Ape van in the south of Italy, and drive it back to the UK, while learning everything there is to learn about pizza on the way. After six weeks and lots of pizza eating, they’ve now arrived back in the Big Smoke and are baking Neapolitan pizzas in the middle of Soho, on Berwick Street Market. The Piaggio van’s still with them – the rear of it now converted into a mobile stone pizza oven. And the concept is proving popular. On our lunchtime visit, a long queue of curious onlookers had formed, all of them waiting for a slice of the two homegrown British pizzaiolos. Anne Faber
