With just a month before the May 3 local elections, the electoral race is surging on at full throttle, magnetising the media and getting the nation nattering. We have a voice so we will all march down to vote. Sounds straightforward enough right? Think again. According to the Electoral Commission, tens of thousands of eligible Londoners are at risk of not having their say by not being registered to vote – with a shocking 44% of people mistakenly thinking they are. Particularly at risk are those who moved house last autumn who, as Samantha Mills of the Electoral Commission notes, have the ‘misconception that if they pay council tax, they are registered to vote’. With 56% of 19-24 year olds not being registered, along with many from the EU, a large proportion of our London is going unheard. Make sure you’re registered. Simple as. Roma Wells
