Ice, ice baby: rise to the challenge at the Baking Lab

Ever since the ‘Great British Bake Off’ on BBC2 captivated the nation, it’s become clear that we are a nation obsessed with baking. But while there are ever more cooking, cake decorating, and even butchery classes in London, dedicated baking classes remain a rarity in London. Now a dedicated ‘baking lab’ has opened up in St John’s Wood. Run by home baker Maria Mayerhofer, the Baking Lab offers a variety of classes that will make your oven steam up with excitement. Classes include afternoon tea baking (with scones, macarons, chocolate tarts, and lemon and poppy seed cakes), Scandinavian baking (where you learn how to make Danish rye bread and cinnamon twisters) and kids’ baking (making pizzas and muffins). And for those who dread damning Paul Hollywood-style verdicts when it comes to breadmaking, there are a whole series of classes that will teach you to master the art of the loaf (including French and Italian bread baking and a sourdough course). Classes don’t run regularly, so make sure to check the website if you don’t want to miss out on your favourite.
