Can you remember when you last played basketball? In fact, when was the last time you even saw someone shooting hoops? It’s difficult to know exactly why we haven’t fully embraced this American past time – perhaps we already had netball and decided that was good enough, or maybe we weren’t quite ready to don a baggy vest and let our armpit hair sprout forth into the faces of our competitors. Whatever the reason, Nike has decided it’s time for things to change.
The Regal – presumably named in an attempt to tap into residual Jubilee fever – sits in a small corner of Lambeth, resplendent with golden blingtastic trimmings and a wooden floor that shimmers as radiantly as Michael Jordan’s head. And it’s there ‘for you – the ballers of London – to enjoy for free’, as Nike puts it. So, if a three pointer makes you think of a Powerpoint slide and your best guess at shooting hoops would involve a weapon and a packet of crisps, head to south London and take a spin on this court. Just leave your firearms at home. Alex Plim
