The Scala Beyond film festival, taking place at venues across the capital until Sept 29, aims to recapture the spirit of London’s much-missed fleapit cinema with a season of exploitation classics, experimental oddities and wild all-night events. We asked a handful of the festival’s key programmers to pick the screening they’re most excited about. This is the third in an ongoing series of blog posts keeping you up to date with the best events across the festival.

Sam Cuthbert from the Parker Posey Film Festival

His recommendation
‘VHS Heroes: A Celebration of Camcorder Mavericks’ at the Roxy Bar & Screen on Sept 13.

What is it?
A tribute to those no-budget filmmakers who grabbed a bulky, early-model camcorder and set off to make an epic. Films screened will include ‘Rhino Bitch’, ‘Hunt For the Yorkshire Grimace’ and an early work by the one and only Edgar Wright.

Why will it be great? Cuthbert
‘VHS is coming back in a big way this year. Remember when everyone said vinyl was dead? Well just wait to hear, see, even smell the analogue glory of these films. I challenge you to spot the difference between this and your Blu-ray collection. Just don’t adjust the tracking!’
