Pest control: giant spiders discovered in Highgate Cemetery

It’s time to put that snack you have in your hand down, because we have some creepy news to share with you. A rare spider has been discovered in Highgate Cemetery, and not only do we have a new species of the shiver-inducing creature in London but these are some of the biggest in the UK. The orb weaver spider, Meta bourneti, measures a whopping 30mm in length and there’s an estimated 100 adult spider bodies in the tombs they were found in. The only consolation we have is that the not-so-little critters need total darkness, meaning that the city’s night lights will keep them safely out of our way (we hope).  But it seems that giant pests have been running rampant in London for a while now. In November 2012, a 16-month-old girl was bitten by a ‘footlong’ rat in her Camden home after her parents left their front door open in the evening. Thankfully the girl received treatment and made a full recovery. What’s next? A lion? A tiger? A bear?!  Carly-Ann Clements
