To get International Women’s Day off to a flying start, WOW is back at the Southbank Centre today (until Sunday) exploring key gender questions like: Can men be feminists? Has porn hijacked our sex lives? Why are there so few women in politics? Can a feminist wear high heels? With a packed schedule of talks, exhibitions, debates, comedy and other offerings celebrating women of the world, there’s almost too much to choose from. One of Britain’s finest actresses talks about some of the diverse roles she’s played and how they portray women from different walks of life.
Bridget Christie 8-10pm
Laugh your way into the weekend with a bit of stand up comedy. If you’ve ever wondered why the Women’s Study Section in Waterstone’s smells of farts, this is right up your street.
The Guy’s Guide to Feminism 11.30am – 12.30pm
This session will include an A to Z of feminism for men. If you can’t make this one, catch it again on Sunday.
Being a Sport 1pm- 2.30
Following a particularly sporty summer last year, this discussion looks at how women in sport are portrayed. Olympian boxer Natasha Jonas is one of the special guests.
Susana Baca 7.30pm
If you haven’t heard the sweet poetic sound of Afro-Peruvian Baca get yourselves on YouTube now. Singing songs from her ‘Afrodiaspora’ album which mixes musical influences from all over Latin America and Africa.
Sunday Jane Austen 10.30am- 11.30am
Are Austen’s novels still relevant today? As Pride and Prejudice reaches 200 it’s still a widely cherished piece of work. In this debate some may beg to differ.
