St Bride’s Church in Fleet Street has launched an appeal for donations to help it reach the £350,000 target needed to complete vital restoration work to its famous tiered spire. The spire’s unique shape is said to have inspired the tiered wedding cake – and proved to be just as wobbly as one when, last year, parts of its 300-year-old stone structure started to fall on passers-by. The essential work includes restoring the spire’s weathered stonework, as well as cleaning, and it is hoped that it will be completed before winter strikes. The project has so far raised £700,000 to help whip the Grade II–listed building, which calls itself ‘the spiritual home of the media’, into shape. But it is a way off its total target, an estimated £2.5m, and its projected finish date in 2015. Kate Hutchinson
