I spy ‘The Americans’ TV Review

Posted at 3:15 pm, June 1, 2013 in Arts & Entertainment

You’re probably in one of three camps regarding ‘Homeland’: a) you miss it; b) you miss it but wish it hadn’t got a bit lame halfway through season two; c) you haven’t seen it. Whichever applies to you, you’ll love ‘The Americans’.

Plonking the enemy within motif in the context of the Cold War, it stars Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell as two Soviet spies working undercover in Reagan’s America. Thriller, family melodrama, dark comedy, period piece and political comment – it’s all here and it’s pretty much unmissable. Early ’80s fetishists may also be interested that the opener employs both ‘In the Air Tonight’ and ‘Tusk’ to intriguing effect.

‘The Americans’ begins Saturday June 1, 10pm, ITV. Read our verdict now. Brit abroad Matthew Rhys tells us about goat sacrifice, LA life and playing a spy here.
