What’s that smell? Design doesn’t have to be visual or tactile to make an impact, as this olfactory exhibition proves. The scent of one well-loved and deeply aromatic spice – pepper – is the inspiration for perfumes, limited edition design products and an installation, all taking place at the London Newcastle gallery in Shoreditch. The event will be an experiment to find the perfect spice blend and to dissect the layers of sensory experience that lie within the humble peppercorn. Explore the subtle facets of the pepper aroma by booking dinner at the ‘Golden Canteen’ on Wednesday September 18 or Friday September 20, or take part in a cocktail-making or ice-sculpting workshop. Buy tickets at designmarketo.com.

Perfume, Sir? is at the London NewCastle Project Space, 28 Redchurch Street, London, E2 7DP. September 17-21. Free. Find more events at London Design Festival or discover what London smells like according to a top perfume maker.
