Meat lovers of Clapham, rejoice! The Ginger Pig, esteemed purveyor of all things porky (and beefy, lamby and chickeny) has just opened its first shop in south-west London. It’s on Abbeville Road, already a dining and shopping destination thanks to a clutch of great restaurants and cafés (including Abbeville Kitchen and Bistro Union) and independent retailers.
It’s the butcher’s sixth outlet in the capital, following on from shops in Borough Market (the original premises), Marylebone, Waterloo, Shepherd’s Bush and Hackney. Expect to find a sterling selection of meat, poultry and sausages, as well as pies, cured meats, spices, preserves and pickles. Hot treats – sausage rolls and roast sandwiches – are promised at lunchtimes.
And if you’re a fan of the Pig’s pork – especially the bacon from its rare-breed Old Spot, Tamworth, Berkshire and Plum Pudding pigs – you might want to trot over to Indian restaurant Dishoom. It’s serving up a limited-edition Ginger Pig version of its acclaimed bacon naan roll, from October 7 until November 2, at both its branches, in Covent Garden and Shoreditch.
