Master butchers Turner & George open their first shop

Meat-eaters: rejoice! The boys behind top online meat supplier the East London Steak Co (who supplied all the meat to the Meatopia festival earlier this year) are going all bricks ’n’ mortar with their very first butcher’s shop. It’s not actually in east London, but in Islington, so the whole business has sensibly ditched the old name and will now be called Turner & George, after two of the directors – chef Richard Turner (also the exec chef of Hawksmoor) and butcher James George. Talk about some accomplished steak-holders. Sorry, we mean stakeholders. Arf arf.

The new venture, opening in October, will bring an old butcher’s back to life, complete with original tiles and cold stores downstairs. All the meat is sourced from small, family-owned British farms (with a focus on traditional and rare breeds), then dry-aged on the bone in-house before being hand-cut, wrapped in paper and carefully boxed (with no freezing or vacuum-packing). If you can’t make it to the shop, the online store is still going strong, offering next-day deliveries within Greater London using their own vans. But if you find yourself near the Angel, do pop over for a butcher’s. Tania Ballantine
