Still from Ballast

From ‘The Simpsons’ to ‘Spirited Away’, animation is universally cherished. From October 25 till November 3, London will become a hub of animation, with over 250 shorts and feature-length films being shown from 30 countries across three cinemas.

Now in its 10th year, London International Animation Festival continues to challenge and engage with a creative visual feast, showcasing a whole spectrum of genres at the Barbican, the Horse Hospital and Rio Cinema. Alongside the films, there will be Q&As, workshops, seminars and competitions to get involved with. The price is right, too, with tickets costing £4-£10.

Director of the festival, Nag Vladermersky, picks (with difficulty) his top five highlights of LIAF:

1. Persistence of Vision

‘Help celebrate LIAF’s 10th birthday at the Gala opening night on October 25 at Barbican, with the UK premiere of Persistence of Vision, directed Minneapolis-born Kevin Shreck, who will be doing a Q&A session after the showing.’

2. Subconscious Password

‘On October 27 at the Horse Hospital watch Canadian Chris Landreth tell the absurd misadventures of Charles.’

3. Consuming Spirits

‘Director Chris Sullivan put 14 years of painstaking self-funded production into this impressively detailed and haunting film, which follows the apparently dead-end lives of three protagonists confronting their secrets. Watch the film on October 27 and the Horse Hospital.’

4. Tram

‘France’s Michaela Pavlatova’s funny and sultry tram ride will be shown on October 25 at Barbican.’

5. Lonely Bones
[vimeo 54591734 w=528&h=320]

‘This trippy French film by Rosto about a one-eyed man who escapes a hotel room into a world where space and time melt together is shown on October 31 at Barbican.’
